On December 10, 1982, Dr. Samuel Zeveloff, President of the North Carolina State University (NCSU) Chapter of The Wildlife Society, sent a letter and questionnaire to wildlife professionals across the state of North Carolina in an attempt to gather information and assess the level of interest in forming a statewide chapter of The Wildlife Society (TWS). He received many favorable responses to this letter and on February 21, 1983, Dr. Zeveloff sent an invitation letter for an organizational meeting of the new North Carolina Chapter of the Wildlife Society (NCTWS). The organizational meeting was held at the McKimmon Center on the campus of NCSU on April 8, 1983, just four days after N.C. State's dramatic "Cinderella" victory over Houston for the NCAA Division I men's basketball title. All new members were required to pay $5.00 in dues to become an official voting member and the members approved the Chapter's original by-laws at this organizational meeting. A total of 62 people joined as charter members of NCTWS, including wildlife professionals from throughout the state and many of the NCSU Chapter members. The North Carolina Chapter of The Wildlife Society was officially chartered as a state chapter of The Wildlife Society on June 1, 1983. As an officially chartered, professional chapter of The Wildlife Society, NCTWS became independent of N.C. State University and the former NCSU Chapter, where it had its formative roots. On August 9, 1983, Dr. Zeveloff sent a letter to all Charter members announcing the results of the first election of Chapter officers (see chart for complete details). Bob Hazel was elected as the Chapter's first President and he conducted an NCTWS Executive Board meeting on October 7, 1983. He then represented the Chapter when NCTWS formally received its charter at a presentation ceremony at 3:30 pm. on Sunday November 6, 1983, at the 37th annual Southeastern Association of Fish and Wildlife Agencies (SEAFWA) meeting being held in Asheville, North Carolina. The first annual meeting of NCTWS members was held on April 27, 1984 at Gardner Hall on the campus of NCSU. The Chapter has held annual meetings each year since that date (see chart). The first meeting concluded with a special pig-pickin'; at the Yates Pond Teaching Facility near campus. Bob Hazel continued to serve as the Chapter's first President until the second annual business meeting held on February 18, 1985, when Carl Betsill became the second President of the Chapter.
